Enochian Magick

Enochian magic is a system of ceremonial magic based on the 16th-century writings of John Dee and Edward Kelley, who wrote that their information, including the revealed Enochian language, was delivered to them directly by various angels. Dee’s journals contain the record of these workings, the Enochian script, and the tables of correspondences used in Enochian magic. Dee and Kelley believed their visions gave them access to secrets contained within Liber Logaeth, which Dee and Kelley referred to as the “Book of Enoch”.

The essence of Enochian magic involves the recitation of one or more of nineteen Angelical Keys, which are also referred to as Calls. These keys are a series of rhetorical exhortations which function as evocations when read in the Enochian language. They are used to effect the “opening of ‘gates’ into various mystical realms.” The first eighteen keys are used to ‘open’ the realms of the elements and sub-elements, which are mapped onto the quadrants and sub-quadrants of the Great Tablet. The nineteenth key is used to ‘open’ the Thirty Aethyrs.

The Enochian system is a complex and sophisticated one, and there is much debate among scholars about its origins and authenticity. Some believe that Dee and Kelley were genuine seers who were contacted by angels, while others believe that they were either deluded or deliberately deceiving their audience. Regardless of its origins, Enochian magic has had a profound influence on Western occultism, and it continues to be studied and practiced by magicians today.

Here is a more detailed overview of the key elements of Enochian magic:

  • The Enochian language: The Enochian language is a constructed language that was allegedly revealed to Dee and Kelley by the angels. It is a complex and highly structured language, and it is believed to be the language of the angels.
  • The Angelical Keys: The Angelical Keys are a series of nineteen invocations that are used to contact the angels. Each key is a series of rhetorical exhortations that are designed to persuade the angels to answer the magician’s call.
  • The Great Table: The Great Table is a diagram that is used to represent the angelic realms. The table is divided into four quadrants, each of which represents one of the four elements. Each quadrant is further divided into nine sub-quadrants, each of which represents a sub-element.
  • The Thirty Aethyrs: The Thirty Aethyrs are a series of thirty mystical realms that are said to lie beyond the material world. The aethyrs are arranged in a series of concentric spheres, and each aethyr is associated with a different angel. See my article about the Vision and the Voice, Crowley’s experience of the 30 Aethyrs.
